Manitowoc County 4-H Horse Project

Having fun & learning...one ride at a time

Our first project meeting of the 08/09 year was well attended: 11 youths and 8 parents/leaders. Brenda Weyers gave a presentation on bits and bridles, and we played "Bridle in a Bucket", reassembling two bridles from the parts in a pail. Marilyn Lentz reviewed horse parts with the assistance of Chloe, a granddaughter of the famous Seabiscuit. Hippology stations were available, where 10 youths and 3 parents tested their horse knowledge. (Scores listed at right) Finally, our host Joan Waak gave a short demonstration on warming up your horse as we start thinking about riding in the slowly-warming weather.

Our second project meeting was also well attended: a total of 25 youths and parents/leaders. We began with a new set of Hippology stations, with 11 youths and 2 parents testing their horse knowledge. (Scores listed at right) Christal Mulder gave a presentation on competitive horse judging-another way of testing our horse knowledge. Hopefully everyone learned how to judge, what judges look for, and how to use those tips in our daily, horse-loving ways!

Winter Project Meeting-3/28/09

The final winter project meeting of the year was held at Waak’s Angel’s Flight Farm. We had a nice turnout of 4-H members and their horses. Joan Waak gave us some tips on balanced riding, terms used in the Dressage Suitability class, and how cue your horse into the various gaits.

Not too many people took the hippology tests, as most were riding their horses.

A big thank-you to our clinicians and all those who participated in our project meetings!
